Dimitar Berbatov tips ex-United teammate to be manager of Red Devils one day

Dimitar Berbatov has tipped one of his former Manchester United teammates to be potentially the next manager of the Red Devils.

Erik ten Hag is under pressure at Manchester United after what has been a very disappointing campaign so far for the Red Devils as they sit in 8th place in the Premier League.

Their 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground was almost unforgivable due to the East Midlands side’s standing in the division and the relatively new manager who was at the helm in Nuno Espirito Santo.

If the slide down the table continues, then a new manager will surely be targeted by those in charge at Old Trafford and Dimitar Berbatov has named one of his former teammates who should be in the running.

Berbatov names potential new United boss

Speaking to The Sun, the former Bulgarian striker, who was at Old Trafford for three years between 2009 and 2012, has tipped Wayne Rooney to be manager at United in the future.

“I do not doubt that he is going to come back and be a manager because I think that’s what he likes to do,” Berbatov said. “I think, ultimately, at one time in the future he would like to be the manager of Manchester United. How he is going to get there is another question.

“I hope he is going to continue to climb that ladder of success in that business to be a manager. Unfortunately, he had a bit of a setback with the Birmingham job. You cannot argue with the numbers though. Losing a lot of games. The team was fifth when he came in, when he was sacked they were 20th. You cannot argue with that.

“Yes, someone can say ‘they did not give him enough time’ but now in today’s football results need to come fast. I hope he will come back stronger and continue on that path to one day be the manager of Man Utd.”

Rooney not the right move

What is clear, despite Berbatov’s recommendation, Rooney is certainly not good enough to be a manager of the Red Devils just yet, particularly with how his managerial spell at Birmingham City ended.

Perhaps in the future, with more experience under his belt, Rooney could be considered for the vacancy but at this moment in time, Ten Hag is still at the helm, despite a string of poor performances.

A new manager may well be sought after towards the end of the season if results continue to nosedive as they have done in this campaign but Rooney is not the man to arrest this current slide.
