Dimitar Berbatov says he would try and sign Kylian Mbappe for Manchester United

Former Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov has been setting out his transfer recommendations for the club.

Berbatov was speaking to The Express and laid out his highly ambitious advice for United as the club approaches a pivotal summer.

The Bulgarian said: “For a striker, and it’s pretty much impossible to happen, but if I was a manager in an alternative world, I would probably try to make Haaland and Mbappe, one of these two players for the striker position because I like to watch them.

“In the midfield I would go for Verratti as well, I like Marco Verratti I just think he’s unbelievable on the ball with everything he is doing.

“For centre-back obviously I have a bit of difficulty here with centre-back because they do need a centre-back, even though they do have five players for the position things are not going quite well.

“Rudiger, based on his performances he is a good fit to play. He is aggressive, he is good on the ball, he can be a good choice.”

One realistic option

Mbappe is available on a free transfer this summer and given United’s size, you would like to think the club would be in the mix to sign a player of his quality.

Instead it says so much about how badly run United have been, that even with his PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino potentially heading to Old Trafford – there is no realistic possibility of the France international heading to United this summer.

Marca report Mbappe’s move to Real Madrid on a free transfer is nearly a done deal.

Some of the other names suggested by Berbatov do not seem likely either. Marco Verratti won’t be leaving PSG, while ESPN reported United have given up on the Haaland chase.

A struggle to get into the top four seems to cost United with these truly elite forwards, but a possible move for Antonio Rudiger is not impossible.

Rudiger is out of contract this summer, and The Mirror has linked United with making a move for the defender, whose situation is made even more uncertain by Chelsea’s own troubled off-field situation.

As Berbatov states, despite having some quality at centre-back, there is room for improvement. Signing Rudiger on a free transfer could be a smart move.

United have conceded 40 goals in the Premier League this season, only the 12th best record in the division. Rudiger’s Chelsea have the second best record, with only 19 goals against.
