Dimitar Berbatov has made his feelings clear about what two Manchester United players must do at Old Trafford if they wish to continue playing under Ruben Amorim.

Ruben Amorim is on the verge of seeing out the 2024-25 Premier League season with Manchester United after his arrival at Old Trafford from Sporting CP in 2024.

The 40-year-old United manager has faced a tough challenge at the Premier League club after he succeeded former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag at the Red Devils.

Erik ten Hag’s reign as United manager ended last October after the Red Devils’ poor start to the season, with even Amorim left struggling to turn around his side’s form.

Amorim inherited his United first-team squad last November and Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven have been the only two major additions during the January window.

The United manager is expected to continue his squad overhaul in the summer transfer window and Amorim is in need of reinforcing key positions on the pitch.

Dimitar Berbatov asked about Man Utd’s difficulty with forward options under Ruben Amorim compared with his time at Old Trafford

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson signed Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham in 2008 and the Red Devils cult hero spent four seasons at Old Trafford.

Dimitar Berbatov arrived at the Red Devils when Sir Alex Ferguson had the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez among his United ranks.

Ruben Amorim, on the other hand, has faced a real challenge with his forward options and Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have struggled in the final third.

Berbatov has warned United strikers like Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee that Amorim could lose his “patience” with them if they don’t regularly score.

Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine, the United cult hero said: “Well, different time, different football, different players.

“United have been going through a difficult period in the Premier League, and especially even more so now that Liverpool have won the 20th title, which obviously is a big disappointment for everybody connected to United.

“As for their striker dilemma, that will stay until either the current strikers start scoring goals regularly, or the new season comes and the manager decides his patience is no longer there with them, and maybe he’ll go for someone else.”

Dimitar Berbatov’s feelings on how Ruben Amorim will handle the striker role at Old Trafford after the 2024-25 season

Rasmus Hojlund has only scored nine times and picked up four assists for the Red Devils in 47 matches across all competitions in the 2024-25 campaign.

Joshua Zirkzee, who is currently sidelined with an injury, has only netted seven times and registered three assists in 48 matches in his debut season at United.

Amorim has been left short of firepower in the final third due to the lack of a regular goalscorer and Berbatov feels the United manager will be ruthless going forward.

“Until the season finishes, I hope that whoever is given the chance to play up front can take this chance really seriously, because they need to know that when the new season comes, everything starts anew, the manager will have more time to prepare the team from the beginning,” Berbatov added.

“Then it’s going to be either you produce or you’re not playing, or worse – you’re going to be sold.”

United currently languish in 15th place in the Premier League table and the Red Devils have only three league matches remaining in their woeful season.
