‘Different class’… Solskjaer says he ‘loved’ Man Utd star who was a ‘man mountain’ compared to his teammates

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been raving over the ‘top class’ man he made club captain at Manchester United.

In the summer of 2019, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has his first transfer window in charge of Manchester United.

During this window, he got a few decent signings completed but ultimately nowhere near the amount that the club needed or he wanted, with major names like Erling Haaland missed out on.

But one signing made was Harry Maguire who arrived and became club captain not six months later.

The now 31-year-old enjoyed some immense moments under Ole and has recently shown glimpses of a return to his real class form from early on.

Now, Ole has praised the former United captain and admitted he ‘loved’ the England international as his skipper.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Ole was asked about his squad when he was the boss and in doing so was quizzed over Maguire who he signed for £80m.

Gary Neville brought up Bruno Fernandes discussing him as a captain, to this Ole had just one name on his mind.

“I loved Harry as a captain,” Ole began. “He was the leader in that group for me when I was there. The way he’s handled himself, top-class, just shows the character.

“When he came in he was different class, I still remember the first training session, he looks like a man mountain compared to the others.”

Ole is clearly still a massive fan of Maguire, and the way he handled himself through unfair abuse and being stripped of the armband is something which has won him a fan in many.

Ultimately, the Manchester United armband was probably too heavy for Harry Maguire

Despite the slating Maguire has recieved throughout his career at United, he has usually been fairly solid in defence.

His first season particulary was great and this season he’s forced himself back into Erik ten Hag‘s plans at the club.

Ultimately, being the captain probably placed a heavy burden on Maguire and with characters like Cristiano Ronaldo arriving, it’s possible he was almost drowned by the armband.

Maguire does deserve more credit though as he has always worked hard and given everything for the badge, something a lot of this current squad cannot say.
