Manchester United secured three points against Ipswich Town to put any foolish talk of relegation to bed.

14th in the Premier League table is a dismal position for Manchester United to be in. But after trailing in both recent games to Everton and then Ipswich Town – it could have been worse.

That’s little consolation for a dismal season, but bearing in mind where United are at right now, an incremental step forward is to be welcomed.

This one was done in challenging circumstances. New signing Patrick Dorgu was sent off in the first half, and Ipswich were spirited competitors who pushed to the end, with United eventually coming out on top 3-2.

Manchester United showed spirit

It’s been a really difficult season, and yet throughout, the Manchester United players have kept fighting, and showed togetherness.

This was on show against Ipswich, with MUTV pundit Ben Thornley comparing the performance to the way United dug in to beat Arsenal in the FA Cup at the start of 2025.

Thornley also praised Bruno Fernandes’ passing, which led to all three goals from set pieces, two assists to his name.

He said: “Sometimes when you are down to 10 men, you have to rely on and be more decisive with your deliveries. And they were exactly that.

“And then we saw today what we what we saw against Arsenal when they knocked them out the cup, defending absolutely brilliantly with substitutions that came up with precisely what you needed.”

Speaking about United’s contributors, Thornley praised three players, while also singling out Bruno Fernandes for his non-stop battling.

“Casemiro’s roles, I thought Mazraoui was excellent as well. I thought yet Leny Yoro was worked tirelessly, and the skipper Bruno Fernandes was absolutely outstanding, the amount of work he gets through.”

Fellow analyst David May also lauded Fernandes, commenting: “The three centre-halves were great, but also Bruno [Fernandes] and Ugarte in front of them as well.”

Bruno Fernandes numbers vs Ipswich

Bruno Fernandes’ numbers against Ipswich reflected his very valuable performance.

He created four goalscoring chances in total, managing 81 touches, while making six ball recoveries and winning four duels.

Fernandes is up to 14 assists for the season and 10 goals, leading the way in both categories. Without him, Manchester United really would be in trouble.
