Key figures among Manchester United’s new investors Ineos have been regular attendees at the club’s games over the past month.

During Manchester United’s win over Wigan, former Manchester United CEO David Gill was spotted alongside Sir Dave Brailsford in the stands.

The Athletic had reported that David Gill was approached by Ineos with a view of understanding how the Red Devils were so successful for such a sustained period of time.

Now, in an interview with Rio Ferdinand for Five, David Gill has given an interview on what needs to happen under the club’s new investors.

David Gill on Ineos

David Gill left Manchester United in 2013 at the same time as Sir Alex Ferguson, with the Glazers appointing novice Ed Woodward to oversee David Moyes. It ended disastrously.

Moyes, for all his shortcomings, was denied the stability Gill could have offered, and Manchester United have been on a downwards spiral ever since.

Speaking in the interview, Gill explained that Ineos need to assess what has gone wrong, and add pride back into the club.

He said: “If I was coming in my focus would be an audit on what’s gone wrong in the past.

“If they get that right, they can start to improve the performance on the pitch.

“The club’s been drifting. New partial ownership will hopefully galvanise everybody to say lets get behind it.”

Speaking about Brailsford, he added: “He’s a winner. He will leave no stone unturned. He will say ‘we have to win’, and get that into everybody.

“There are some very good people at Manchester United need who need new direction, and a new outlook.”

Gill discusses bad transfers

Gill was asked about Manchester United’s bad decisions in the transfer market, and was specifically quizzed about the £80 million plus spend on Antony.

Without getting too deep into the Antony debate, with United widely regarded to have paid more than he is worth, Gill responded that it feeds into the analysis he knows Ineos are doing.

He said: “Until you identify the problem and what caused it you can’t fix it, and hopefully you will be in a position where better decisions are made going forward.”

He added that buying players is an inexact science and admitted Sir Alex Ferguson did not get it right all the time either.

He commented: “You’re going to get more right than wrong and the ones you get wrong, you hope are the ones you have spent less money on.

“You buy a player for £30 million, it’s never the right amount. Some are worth 60 some are worth nothing.”
