David de Gea took the plaudits for his outstanding late saves as Manchester United beat West Ham – but he was keen to talk up his teammates.

Speaking after United’s 1-0 victory, De Gea praised the way United defended, and pressed in attack, as well as picking out goalscorer Marcus Rashford.

He told the club website: “I think we are pressing well, we are recovering the ball high in the opponents half so that’s massive for us. I think we defended really well.”

United supporters had voted De Gea man of the match, with Rashford following in second place in the poll.

‘Marcus Rashford can become one of the world’s best’

De Gea spoke highly of Marcus Rashford after the forward scored his 100th goal for the club with a header in the first half.

He said: “He has been here his whole life as a kid and as a first team player with experience already and he’s still very young.

“He’s doing great. I think he can be one of the best players in the world if he keeps focused and training hard and performing well.

“I think he’s a very, very good player and we are happy that he’s with us and playing the way he’s playing.”

Rashford is 24 and should have a long career at Manchester United ahead of him. A new contract is likely to soon be in the works.

He has bounced back from a tough 2021/22, and this season he has scored seven goals and provided three assists already.

Rashford’s displays should secure him a place in England’s World Cup squad, with the tournament providing an opportunity for him to prove De Gea’s words correct.
