Darwin Nunez teammate's assist numbers show how striker could benefit Manchester United's stars
Darwin Nunez is looking like the strongest bet to be Manchester United’s summer striker signing. Having already impressed Erik ten Hag by knocking his Ajax side out of the Champions League, and United have been tracking him throughout 2022.
Nunez scored 34 goals for Benfica last season, helping some of his teammates to career best numbers in the process.
Manchester United’s players will benefit from playing alongside Nunez, with their assist numbers likely to rocket.
Darwin Nunez teammate’s assist numbers rise
Benfica winger Rafa Silva finished the season as the Primeira Liga’s leader for assists, with 15 in total. Another in the Champions League made it 16.
Six of these came for Nunez, the highest combination for any two players in Portugal this past campaign.
For Rafa Silva, 29, this represented an explosion in numbers based on his previous history.
The winger provided only six assists in 2020/21, five in 2019/20, and three in 2018/19.
So in the preceding three seasons, Rafa Silva managed 14 assists combined, fewer than the 16 he delivered in 2021/22, thanks to Darwin Nunez’s lethal goalscoring.
Manchester United players low assist totals
Nunez’s goalscoring can help Manchester United’s players achieve career bests too, if the club can complete a deal for the striker.
This past season Bruno Fernandes provided 14 assists, strong numbers – but he is the only player who will be here next season who managed more than five.
Paul Pogba, departing, provided nine. Of those who will remain, Fred led the team with five assists along with Luke Shaw, with Jadon Sancho on an underwhelming four.
Marcus Rashford managed only two, having provided 12 the previous season.
Adding Nunez into the side will help Manchester United score more goals, which in turn will bring higher assist numbers.
If he leaves Benfica, Rafa Silva’s numbers can be expected to plummet.
