Manchester United defender Jonny Evans was certainly questioned when it had emerged that he would be returning to Old Trafford.
It was clear that Manchester United needed defensive cover following the injury issues suffered by Lisandro Martinez and indeed Raphael Varane.
It was decided that Jonny Evans, who left the club back in 2015, was the man to provide short-term defensive cover but it was certainly one that caused issues amongst fans on social media.
However, since the defender has returned, he has made two starts in the Premier League for the United first team and has thoroughly impressed.
Evans’ impact
The Northern Irish defender lined up alongside Harry Maguire and you could argue that the former Leicester City pairing may well have been the most solid pairing the club have produced this season.
This could be interpreted as a sad indictment on the other defenders at the club but Evans has certainly deserved a huge amount of credit for how he has adapted to playing for United once again.
Former United midfielder Darren Gibson left a nice message for the 35-year-old defender following his good performance. Gibson, who commented on Evans’ Instagram, said: “Go on Jonny son!!! Well deserved.”
It was his first start for the club at Old Trafford in eight years and the defender certainly enjoyed the occasion.
Has Erik ten Hag been proven right
Erik ten Hag cited Evans’ experience on the big stage as the reason why he decided the Northern Irish defender was the cover he needed at centre-back.
Well, not only has the defender brought a wealth of experience with him but, despite being 35 years of age, has performed superbly when he has been given first-team minutes.
Varane missed out on the win against Brentford due to a minor injury so the importance of Evans cannot be understated.
With the defence seemingly being injury-prone this season, Evans may well be key as the season goes on.
