Danny Murphy reveals the ‘two big positives’ for United who were ‘playing for the shirt’ vs Fulham

Manchester United got the win against Fulham. Erik ten Hag may be one of the most relieved men in the United Kingdom right now.

It was his captain, Bruno Fernandes who Erik ten Hag must thank for the three points. The Portuguese midfielder scored the winner in the dying embers at Craven Cottage.

This came after criticism that Bruno shouldn’t have captaincy, which has definitely put him back in the good books of supporters for the time being.

But two other United stars who were brilliant throughout also deserve some of the credit – Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay.

Danny Murphy on Maguire and McTominay

Speaking on the Football Daily podcast, pundit Danny Murphy believes that even though Bruno grabbed the headlines, the duo of Maguire and McTominay deserve immense credit for their performances.

“I think the two big positives are Maguire and McTominay,” Murphy began. “Two players who are playing for the shirt, putting it all in.

“Two players who actually people wouldn’t have been too upset if they’d gone in the summer, but both showed a desire to stay at the club and keep the shirt which is important.”

Naturally, Murphy did give some credit to the goalscorer as well.

“Of course Bruno as well who’s been heavily criticized. That bit of quality in the end which he always gives them in the final third helped them get over the line.”

Maguire and McTominay role models

The pair looked destined to leave Old Trafford in the summer and are now turning up as some of United’s top performers.

A lot of players could learn from the pair. Instead of whinging and sulking, they fought for their place and got back in the side.

Murphy is right, they definitely did play for the shirt against Fulham. Long may it continue.
