Crystal Palace midfielder Will Hughes has pinpointed the arrival of Erik ten Hag as the catalyst in turning Manchester United’s ‘fortunes around’.
A stunning injury-time free-kick from Michael Olise cancelled out Bruno Fernandes‘s opener in last night’s Premier League clash at Selhurst Park.
The 1-1 draw against Patrick Vieira’s Eagles ended United’s nine-match winning streak and prevented Ten Hag from becoming the first Reds boss since Sir Alex Ferguson in 2009 to win ten consecutive matches.
Will Hughes pinpoints the arrival of Erik ten Hag as the catalyst in turning Manchester United’s ‘fortunes around’

After being appointed Manchester United’s latest manager in April 2021, Ten Hag sat alongside Red Devils football director John Murtough to watch his new club get beat by Palace on the final day of last season.
The three-time Eredivisie winner would have been well aware of the magnitude and scale of the job he was taking on having witnessed first-hand United’s final abject display under interim boss Ralf Rangnick.
But following Palace’s late equaliser through Olise last night, Hughes was full of praise for Ten Hag and credited the 52-year-old for the remarkable turnaround in United’s fortunes in the early stages of his tenure.
Speaking via Crystal Palace’s website, Hughes said: “They [Manchester United] have been bang in-form of late. Their manager’s changed their fortunes around this season and they’re a top, top team.
“To go toe-to-toe with them and not be gutted with a point, but deserve it in the end, is a good feeling.”
United endured their worst season in Premier League history last time out and finished sixth in the table and a staggering 35 points behind champions Manchester City.
After kickstarting life in the Premier League with back-to-back defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, as well as being on the receiving end of a 6-3 drubbing to Guardiola’s Citizens at the start of October, Ten Hag’s men have lost one of their last 20.
United sit third in the table going into Sunday’s clash against league leaders Arsenal and are the only English side to remain competing in four competitions.
