With Chelsea dropping their interest, Cristiano Ronaldo’s options of a move away from Manchester United this summer are rapidly dwindling.

The 37-year-old has asked Manchester United to consider suitable offers from sides who are competing in next season’s Champions League.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner wants to challenge for big trophies and a year without Champions League football at this stage of his career is something he doesn’t want to consider.

Following the bombshell that came from Ronaldo’s camp with his desire to leave Manchester United this summer, Chelsea were linked with a move for United’s number seven after allowing Romelu Lukaku to re-join Inter Milan on a season-long loan.

New co-owner Todd Boehly met with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes in Portugal last month and Chelsea signing the Portuguese captain was one of the many topics discussed.

However, Chelsea will not be making any attempt to sign Ronaldo, according to the Athletic.

Ronaldo, who was United’s top scorer last season with 24 goals across all competitions, is yet to join United’s pre-season tour with ‘family reasons’ being cited as the reason for his continued absence.

But with Chelsea becoming the latest big European club to decide against signing Ronaldo, the prospect of the former Juventus man being reintegrated into Erik ten Hag’s side looks to be growing.

As well as Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint Germain are also not interested in signing one of the greatest players of all time this summer.

A return to Real Madrid or Juventus isn’t a possibility and Barcelona are pursuing Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski instead.

Serie A side Napoli are reportedly interested in Ronaldo, the Athletic reports, but they would have to shatter their wage structure to sign him and their chances of competing for the Champions League are rather slim.

A homecoming with Sporting Lisbon would be a step down for Ronaldo at this stage of his career as would a move to the MLS.

With Manchester United’s Premier League campaign starting in 24 days there is a growing sense that Ronaldo could remain at Old Trafford due to a lack of interest in the forward.

With Chelsea’s interest cooling, Mendes and Ronaldo may have to accept a move isn’t forthcoming and that he would be best served linking up with Ten Hag and his Manchester United teammates ahead of the new season.
