Cristiano Ronaldo wanted Luis Enrique at Manchester United
Any United fan watching PSG on Tuesday night must have been left impressed.
The days of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi are long gone, with PSG now thriving having recruited top young players.
Nuno Mendes, Willian Pacho, former United target Joao Neves, Vitinha, Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola spring to mind, with star power coming from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembele.
After dispatching Liverpool and Aston Villa earlier in the competition, PSG beat Arsenal 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.
PSG were dizzying for large spells, with unbelievable fluidity meaning players were popping up all over the pitch.
The control of possession and intense pressing meant Arsenal had to battle to even get back into the tie.
The man behind it all is Luis Enrique – a man who could have been in the United dugout.
After United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021, Sky Sports claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo was lobbying for Enrique to replace the Norwegian.
Enrique was in charge of Spain at the time, having previously guided Barcelona to Champions League glory.
No deal was done with United, though, as Ralf Rangnick and then Erik ten Hag took the reins at Old Trafford.
Just a year after wanting Enrique, United and Ronaldo parted ways with the club going in a new direction.
Ronaldo may feel a little justified; Ten Hag failed to build on a strong first season whilst Enrique is just one game away from the Champions League final.
The Spaniard has done an incredible job in terms of putting together such an impressive unit, playing some exceptional football along the way.
We can only wish to see that kind of football at Old Trafford, with Enrique now hoping to add another Champions League win to his record.
Why Luis Enrique didn’t end up at Manchester United
Ronaldo’s suggestion at least appears to have been heard inside Old Trafford.
Andy Mitten claims on X that Enrique should have become United boss in 2022 when Rangnick stepped aside for Ten Hag to come in.
The big problem was the timing, as Enrique was gearing up for the World Cup in Qatar later that year.
Spain’s preparations were crucial to Enrique, and he seemingly didn’t want to leave his nation in the lurch just months out from the tournament.
Spain ended up crashing out in the last 16, losing on penalties to Morocco despite playing some great football.
Enrique returned to club football with PSG in 2023 and has completely revolutionised their team.
United fans just have to think about what might have been had Enrique arrived at Old Trafford three years ago, and hope that Amorim can eventually take United to the level PSG are at right now.
