Manchester United won the match but lost the battle for top spot in the Europa League group game with Real Sociedad.
Alejandro Garnacho’s winning goal was not quite enough, with a two goal victory required. United could only win 1-0.
This sets up a tough Europa League play-off fixture against a Champions League drop-down team, against an opponent set to be drawn on Monday.
One way or another, United are up for the fight, a point emphasised by striker Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo set up Manchester United’s winning goal for Alejandro Garnacho to score his first goal for the club.
He missed a chance to double United’s lead, failing to demonstrate the ruthless streak he once possessed. Ronaldo is stuck on three goals this season.
He sent a message to supporters after the game, thanking the travelling fans and vowing to keep battling on for the club.
Ronaldo’s message was responded to by wonderkid Alejandro Garnacho, 18, who was starting only his second game for the club.
He looks up to Ronaldo and thanked him for his defence-splitting pass which played him through on goal.
This is a partnership which may not last beyond this season, but Garnacho will clearly be better off long-term from getting to play alongside his idol.
The former Atletico Madrid talent has now established himself as part of the first team squad, and he will hopefully be scoring goals for United long after Ronaldo has gone.
