Manchester United’s injury crisis means James Garner is expected to be promoted to the first-team.
The midfielder – along with Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes – was withdrawn from U23 action this week.
The trio is now expected to travel for United’s game against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
With Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic unavailable, Garner could earn a place on the bench.
And it will be interesting to see if he can move ahead of Fred in the United pecking order.
After all, the Brazilian has already fallen below Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira, and Garner has the talent to make it a hat-trick of disappointments.
Fred is a £47million signing (BBC) yet he still cannot get on the field. Garner may only be 17, but he is one of United’s most promising academy products.
Having featured 20 times for United at various youth levels this season, the holding midfielder could now steep up.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows how to get the best out of youth.
The performances of McTominay and Pereira against Liverpool are a testament to that.
So it would be no surprise if Garner flourished, leaving Fred with another obstacle to overcome.
