Manchester United defender Will Fish is in-demand as his contract enters it’s final year.
Two Manchester United players have seen loan deals cut short already this year. Charlie McNeill has returned to the club from Stevenage, while Alvaro Fernandez‘s spell at Granada ended, and he was sent to Benfica instead.
It shows how loan deals are hard to get right, yet, in the case of Will Fish, Manchester United knew they were onto a sure thing.
Fish overcame a shaky first half of the season at Hibernian in 2022/23 to end as one of their best players, and they were desperate to bring him back this summer.
Manchester United obliged after he had featured in pre-season, and he returned to the Scottish Premiership.
Despite his manager getting fired early in the season, Fish has remained a key player, and is now in demand.
English club want Will Fish
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Will Fish has reeled in some attention from Championship clubs.
One of them is reported to be Cardiff City, who are keen on signing him on a permanent basis this summer.
Fish’s contract is currently set to expire in June 2024. It’s possible Manchester United have an option to trigger an extension, but if so, it has not been activated, meaning clubs are free to negotiate to try and sign Fish to a pre-contract deal.
Fish is expected to take his time on his future, and make a decision in the summer. He may even wait on Manchester United’s plans or advice.
Strong season so far
Fish played in the Europa League qualifiers for Hibernian at the start of the campaign and has made 28 appearances in all competitions.
The 20-year-old centre-back has made 49 appearances in total for the Scottish side, scoring four goals.
It has been a valuable loan spell for him, which has left him better off. Don’t be surprised to see Hibernian do what they can to try and tempt him to stay.
