Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough has praised Manchester United loanee Nathan Bishop for his “brilliant” performance against Exeter.

The Stags beat Exeter City 2-1 at the One Call Stadium on Friday night to equal a club record of ten successive home league wins, previously set in 1949.

Stags’ stopper Bishop made a number of crucial, point-blank saves throughout the clash and impressed in the Mansfield goal.

But in the 95th-minute with a tenth League Two clean sheet moments away, Bishop dropped a cross which fell perfectly into the path of Matt Jay who smashed home the consolation goal.

It looked like Bishop stumbled when attempting to collect the cross, but the 22-year-old would have no doubt been frustrated with that late hiccup.

However, it didn’t stop the former Southend United receiving high praise by his manager.

“[He was] Absolutely brilliant,” said Mansfield boss Clough who was speaking via the club’s website.

“That’s why he’s a little bit disappointed with the mistake [that led to Exeter’s consolation goal].

“When you make a mistake and you still get the three points, that’s okay.

“He kept us in it with three or four brilliant saves tonight.”

The Stags extended their unbeaten league run to 14 games and finished the weekend fifth in the table and just one point off the automatic places while having at least two games in-hand on all four sides that are currently above them.

Despite the error, Nathan Bishop continued his rich vein of form which saw him named in last week’s League Team team of the week.
