Manchester United played the team’s 10th game of the season last night, and Christian Eriksen has been selected to start in everyone.

Far from being a back-up or bit-part player, Eriksen has established himself as integral to the way manager Erik ten Hag wishes his team to play.

Thursday night’s away tie with Omonia was viewed as a match where Eriksen may get a rest. Not yet. The Dane is a player who Ten Hag can’t bear to be without.

He demonstrated why with an excellent performance to help United dominate possession in a hard fought victory in Cyprus.

Eriksen shows why Ten Hag adores him

United made harder work of beating Omonia than it should have been, thanks to some wasteful play in the final third and some poor defending.

The area of the pitch where United dominated was in midfield, where the Red Devils dominated possession and repeatedly carved out chances.

Eriksen played all 90 minutes in the 3-2 victory and had more touches than any player on the pitch.

The Dane made 109 touches, making 20 passes into the final third, creating five goalscoring chances.

Only some wasteful finishing saw Eriksen end the game without an assist, although he does have three already this season.

Eriksen will be due a rest at some stage, perhaps the home fixture without Omonia he will be on the bench. When United face Everton on Sunday, Ten Hag will likely call on him again.

Signed on a free transfer this summer, Eriksen has been excellent value for United this season so far, beyond expectations.

Last night’s performance was just another case of the Dane making an excellent individual display look absolutely routine.
