Chris Sutton believes Ex-United coach could be in line for a move to a ‘bigger club’

Chris Sutton believes that one ex-Manchester United coach may well be targeted for ‘bigger things’ in the future if he carries on his excellent form.

Erik ten Hag has struggled massively for Manchester United this season with the former Ajax coach being on the wrong end of 14 defeats in all competitions this season.

Their latest capitulation, a 2-1 defeat to Nuno Espirito Santo’s Nottingham Forest, has cranked the pressure up on Ten Hag and fans are beginning to become impatient with the 53-year-old.

The manner of the loss, in particular, caused the most frustration from some United fans with Kobbie Mainoo being replaced at half-time for Scott McTominay.

Sutton on McKenna

Speaking on the It’s All Kicking Off Podcast, former Premier League striker Chris Sutton believes that Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna, who was part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s and Jose Mourinho’s backroom team, would be the ideal replacement for Ten Hag.

“I’m a Norwich fan, but there’s a begrudging admiration for the job he’s done,” Sutton said.

“Promoted last season, they’ve been flying this season, but they may be lucky to hang onto him because bigger clubs may be looking and thinking they want a piece of him.”

You wonder whether United may well be one of these ‘bigger clubs’ who could be keen on appointing McKenna as his record for the East-Anglian side speaks for themselves.

At the halfway point of the season in the EFL Championship, Ipswich sit in second place in the division, 10 points behind 1st place Leeds United and are three points clear of third place Leicester City.

McKenna could be the man

It has been a truly remarkable turnaround for the Championship side, who were only promoted into the division last season but they are going through a rough patch at this moment in time.

The East Anglian side hasn’t won since the 12th of December but still remains in the automatic promotion places and are aiming for a place in the Premier League next summer.

If Ipswich did achieve such an amazing feat, you wonder if United would push more for the former Tottenham Hotspur coach.
