Chris Sutton argues Ruben Amorim must now do one thing after Newcastle defeat, Man Utd manager sent clear warning

BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton has insisted that Ruben Amorim must now focus on one key aspect this season after Manchester United’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle.

Ruben Amorim’s men visited St James’ Park on the weekend and Newcastle thumped Manchester United in a one-sided second-half performance on Sunday.

Newcastle took the lead over United in the first half after Sandro Tonali broke the deadlock before Alejandro Garnacho pulled the Red Devils level before half-time.

However, Eddie Howe’s men took control of the contest in the second half and a Harvey Barnes brace put Newcastle 3-1 up in the 64th minute at St James’ Park.

An Altay Bayindir howler then allowed Bruno Guimaraes to add the Magpies’ fourth in the 77th minute and sealed all three Premier League points for Eddie Howe’s side.

United are now 14th in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are on course for their worst finish since the formation of England’s top-flight league in 1992.

The Red Devils have only six Premier League matches remaining in the 2024-25 campaign and United have managed 10 wins from 32 league fixtures this season.

Chris Sutton’s clear-cut assessment of Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim after the Premier League defeat to Newcastle at St James’ Park

Manchester United are likely to finish the 2024-25 season without finishing in a European qualification spot in the Premier League table.

The Red Devils’ hopes of securing European football for the 2025-26 season ultimately rely on their success in the Europa League this season.

The Europa League offers Ruben Amorim the only real option for him to lift major silverware as United manager before the end of the current campaign.

United lifting the Europa League trophy would also ensure that the Red Devils return to European football and secure a place in the Champions League for next season.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Chris Sutton said that United manager Amorim must now “finish the season strongly” rather than face more pressure at the club.

“What a season Newcastle United are having. It’s a massive result for them today,” he said, as per BBC Sport.

“But where do Man Utd go? They have to finish the season strongly, in my opinion.

“For Ruben Amorim to start next season, he has to have a bit of faith from the fan base but if they keep losing and playing the way they’re playing then the pressure really will be on.”

What Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim said about the 4-1 Premier League defeat to Newcastle at St James’ Park

Speaking after the trip to St James’ Park, Amorim insisted that he couldn’t take any major positives from United’s performance against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

“It’s really difficult to look at the best things,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“The best thing is to focus on the next one. Analyse this one but it’s really hard to be here, after this result, to try to see it.

“Maybe, in a few days, I will watch the game and try to take that but it’s really hard in this moment to have any good feeling about the game.”

United will return to action on Thursday evening for their crucial second-leg Europa League quarter-final tie against French side Lyon at Old Trafford.
