Manchester United are a good few years of squad building off challenging Manchester City, but one thing could expedite that process.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has now completed his deal and is firmly in a position as a minority owner of Manchester United.
However, Ineos are now in charge of the entire footballing operations side of the club, he has grand plans which include stadium upgrades or a replacement.
But the grandest of plans is probably his desire to knock Manchester City from their perch as the leagues and Europe’s dominant force – something Pep Guardiola has backed them to eventually do.
But Jamie Carragher doesn’t agree, and here’s why…

Jamie Carragher assesses Manchester United’s timetable for success
Writing in a column for The Telegraph, the Liverpool legend and pundit, Carragher, has evaluated the comment from Sir Jim on knocking City off their perch.
“Manchester United can forget about knocking Manchester City off their perch while Pep Guardiola remains in English football.
“United can change owners, headhunt the best chief executive and sporting director in the world, revamp their recruitment department, rebuild Old Trafford and appoint their best manager since Sir Alex Ferguson. It doesn’t matter. So long as Guardiola is around, City will lose no sleep.
“United will never be the most dominant club in their city, let alone the rest of the country until City are in the process of hiring a new coach.
“The champagne corks will be popping in the Ineos offices on the day Guardiola goes because it will reduce the timescale by which United’s ambitions can realistically be realised.”
Sir Jim Ratcliffe needs to make the most of this summer
This summer may be the first for the new United structure, but it’s no less important with a lot of work to do.
Sir Jim needs to make moves this summer to put United closer to the league title contenders to be well-placed next season and possibly the year after to take advantage of Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool and also Pep leaving City at some point.
That is why United need to waste no time strengthening so that when the inevitable drop comes, it is the Red Devils who can benefit.
