Carl Rushworth to Manchester United, £5m target emerges as potential replacement for international

Manchester United have identified Brighton goalkeeper Carl Rushworth as a target ahead of the summer transfer window.

The biggest problem for Manchester United this season has been goals. Not just a lack of goals scored, but far too many have been conceded, which has led to dire results in domestic competitions.

First-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana has had his difficult moments through his first two seasons at the club. The Cameroon international committed two howlers in United’s 2-2 draw with Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final first-leg.

Onana will hope to redeem himself between now and the end of the season, but the jury is still out on the former Inter Milan stopper.

Meanwhile, back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is expected to leave United this summer, after making eight appearances for the club since joining in September 2023 from Fenerbahce.

The Turkey international has been limited to cup competitions, making just one appearance in the Premier League, despite Onana’s questionable form. He may seek regular football elsewhere ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Carl Rushworth emerges as Manchester United target

Although it is not impossible, it’s unlikely that Andre Onana will leave Old Trafford this summer.

The same can’t be said for Bayindir, which means Amorim needs to find a second-choice keeper who can push Onana for a place in the team.

United in Focus understands, after speaking with Graeme Bailey, that Brighton’s Carl Rushworth is emerging as an option for United.

“United are going to be doing work on the goalkeeping department this summer, whether that is number one remains to be seen, but behind [Andre] Onana or whoever it may be, they want options and so it is not surprising they are assessing their options and Rushworth is one on their radar.”

The highly-rated 23-year-old is currently number three at the AMEX Stadium behind Bart Verbruggen and Jason Steele, although it is understood that he could cost somewhere in the region of £5 million.

Rushworth is likely to attract interest from multiple Premier League suitors this summer.

The young stopper returned from a loan stint at Hull City midway through the season and could be on the move at the end of the season.

Tom Heaton contract set to expire

Tom Heaton is one of four United players who could see his contract expire this summer.

That means the Red Devil may need to sign two goalkeepers this summer, unless Amorim wishes to promote another player from United’s academy.

Heaton has not made a single appearance this term and is fully expected to leave the club at the end of the season.

The stopper is one of two players in the current squad to have played under Sir Alex Ferguson, along with Jonny Evans, who is also expected to leave United in the coming months.
