Cameron Borthwick-Jackson signs for another new club four years after his Manchester United exit

It is almost a decade since Cameron Borthwick-Jackson announced himself to Manchester United fans.

Former manager Louis van Gaal gave Cameron Borthwick-Jackson his first team debut for Manchester United in 2015, and the young full-back seized his chance.

It was at a time when Van Gaal turned to youth to solve an injury crisis, something United supporters wished current boss Erik ten Hag did with Alvaro Fernandez this year.

Borthwick-Jackson gave a solid account of himself, ending his breakthrough season with 14 appearances.

What happened to Cameron Borthwick-Jackson

The following summer there was a change of manager at Manchester United, and it was exactly what Borthwick-Jackson did not need.

The young defender did not play a single game under Jose Mourinho, sent on a succession of loan spells which unravelled and saw his career lose momentum.

A spell at Wolves went poorly and was cut short. Then the following season he chose Leeds, fatefully turning down an option to sign on loan at Ajax, per ESPN.

The Leeds spell went poorly and before he knew it, he was out on loan at Scunthorpe United, followed by stints at Tranmere Rovers and Oldham.

It was not until 2020 that Borthwick-Jackson was finally released, long overdue from his perspective, having been signed to a long-term deal in 2016 before Mourinho’s arrival.

Borthwick-Jackson signed with Oldham permanently before stepping up a level to Burton Albion for two seasons. Then last summer he made the surprise move to join Polish club Slask Wroclaw.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson latest

Borthwick-Jackson’s stint in Poland’s top division has not gone well. He ended up playing only two first team games. Now, he finds himself out on loan again.

Scottish Premiership side Ross County announced this week that Borthwick-Jackson has signed on loan until the end of the season.

He is under contract in Poland until 2025, and this is his opportunity to get back in the shop window.

Borthwick-Jackson is still only 26, and should have plenty of football left in him. He is a former England under-17, under-19 and under-20 international, working through what has become a journeyman career, a long way from the glitz and glamour of Old Trafford.
