Bruno Fernandes watches Boavista beat Sporting Lisbon

Manchester United attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes last night watched Boavista beat Sporting Lisbon 2-1 in a Liga Portugal Bwin clash.

United’s Portuguese Magnifico was enjoying some down time before joining up with the Portugal national squad having been called-up by Fernando Santos alongside United teammates Diogo Dalot and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The clash between Boavista and Sporting Lisbon carries extra meaning to United’s number eight and he has a special affiliation with both clubs.

The 28-year-old came through the Boavista Academy and spent eight years in the youth ranks before signing for Italian side Novara in 2012 on a permanent deal.

Fernandes spent five years in Italy with Novara, Udinese and Sampdoria before returning to Portugal having been signed by Sporting.

The 46-time Portugal international elevated his game to new heights while playing for the Portuguese giants, and his eye-catching goal involvement figures certainly caught the gaze of the Red Devils.

From 137 matches for Sporting, their former captain scored 63 goals and laid on 50 assists before being signed by the twenty-time league champions in a deal that could reach £67.7m with add-ons in January 2020.

Fernandes has been a revelation since signing for the Reds and he has produced 51 goals and 40 assists from 134 matches.

With Harry Maguire seemingly facing a huge battle to get back into Erik ten Hag’s starting line-up with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez continuing to look increasingly dominant and comfortable alongside one and other, Fernandes has been wearing the captain’s armband.

In the five matches that Fernandes has been United’s captain this campaign, United have a perfect record.

Let’s hope that record continues if Fernandes wears the armband in our trip to Manchester City on 2 October.
