Last night seemed a pivotal moment in the careers of Goncalo Ramos and former Manchester United man Cristiano Ronaldo.

Having been handed his first World Cup start in place of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Ramos scored a hat-trick in Portugal’s 6-1 win against Switzerland in the round of 16.

The 37-year-old is yet to score a goal in the World Cup knockout rounds, but Benfica’s marksman had no trouble whatsoever getting off the mark.

The nature of the Selecao’s win against the Swiss and the devastating performance from the 21-year-old Ramos felt like the handing over of a baton.

Fernando Santos will likely continue with Ramos for the Selecao’s quarter-final clash against Morocco over Manchester United’s former number seven.

But with Ramos seemingly ready to lead Portugal into a post-Ronaldo era, could he be the man to spearhead Erik ten Hag’s forward line at Old Trafford?

With four goals from as many caps for Portugal and 14 goals to his name for Benfica this season, Ramos is in red-hot form and his stock will be at an all-time high after bagging a World Cup hat-trick.

The Sun reported in October that Manchester United were monitoring Ramos’ impressive start to the campaign.

Following last night’s win against Switzerland, Bruno Fernandes pinpointed six qualities that Ramos possesses, which will likely resonate with Erik ten Hag.

Speaking via The Athletic: “People are not aware of the quality of the Portuguese league. Benfica have been doing really well in the Champions League, so people should be aware of Goncalo, of his qualities.

“He’s a player that runs and works a lot, helps the team defensively, he’s that type of striker that is everywhere.

“He had the chance to score three goals, but he’s a striker that creates space for others, fights, has the ball and is strong. Today was his day to score the goals and we’re happy for that.”

United’s number eight’s glowing report of Ramos very much ticks the checklist of the qualities and attributes Ten Hag desires from his number nine.

Like Anthony Martial, he wants his strikers to lead the press, run in behind and be the vocal point of the attack by producing neat interplay.

According to Fernandes, Ramos has all those traits and more in abundance.

Ten Hag’s ears may have pricked up regarding Fernandes’ comments on his compatriot.
