As Manchester United trudged off the pitch at home to Wolves on February 1 after a 0-0 draw, Anthony Martial looked disconsolate as he was approached by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Another goalless performance had made it just one strike in six games for the Frenchman.
Solskjaer had confidence that the Portuguese maestro who made his debut in the Wolves fixture would help Martial to shine.
After a week’s break in Spain for a winter training camp, Martial and Bruno Fernandes returned as best of buddies, often seen posing for pictures together in the squad’s Marbella base.
Fast forward to now, and Martial has scored eight goals in his last 11 appearances.
A previously rarely seen smile on the face of the Frenchman has become a common sight.
Fernandes is enjoying seeing his teammate flourish, and sent a message from the club’s Carrington training ground yesterday evening.
The duo looked in great spirits as they shared a laugh, with Fernandes quipping on Instagram that when Martial is with him, he ‘always’ smiles.
After linking up for an opening goal in March’s Manchester derby win, Fernandes set up Martial for another goal in Saturday’s 5-2 win against Bournemouth.
Martial will argue he did most of the work, curling the ball into the top corner from 25 yards out, yet it was Fernandes who picked him out in space and gave him the opportunity to do so.
Fernandes is up to six assists already, while Martial has just hit his 20th goal of the season in all competitions, which included his first ever hat-trick for the club a fortnight ago.
His career is on an upwards trajectory and this partnership is here to stay. Keep on scoring, keep on winning, and keep on smiling.
