Bruno Fernandes has explained why he handed the ball to Marcus Rashford to convert the penalty won by Anthony Martial for Manchester United.

It was Marcus Rashford’s high and effective penalty against Jordan Pickford that effectively won Manchester United the game at Goodison Park.

After Anthony Martial went down in the penalty box following a challenge from Ashley Young, the penalty was awarded by John Brooks after the forward was originally booked for an alleged dive.

Once the penalty was given, Bruno Fernandes grabbed the ball but in the end, the United captain handed the ball to Rashford to end his two-month goalscoring drought.

Fernandes on penalty decision

Speaking to Sky Sports after the victory at Goodison Park, the former Sporting Lisbon midfielder provided his reasoning for that decision which raised a few eyebrows.

“I thought Marcus needed some confidence. I was 100% sure he’d score the penalty. It gives him a boost, after the penalty he was unstoppable,” Fernandes said waxing lyrical about the Englishman.

It’s been a tough few months for Rashford, the English forward, who scored 30 goals in all competitions last season, had failed to find the net in nearly three months of football.

That goal will surely do the Englishman the world of good and he certainly looked to be a lot more confident and assured in his performances in the final moments of the victory.

Rashford off the right

The first half was a struggle for the 25-year-old but the second half was much more like the old Rashford. He was constantly creating chances out wide and was unlucky not to have an assist to his name as Garnacho’s effort, following Rashford’s cross, found the side netting.

The winter months bring a tough run of games for the Red Devils and the United academy graduate needs to be in top form for this huge run of fixtures.

Liverpool, Newcastle, Chelsea and Aston Villa are all to come before the end of the calendar year. If Rashford can get back to the levels he showed last season, the Red Devils may have a fighting chance in these games.
