It was a night to remember as Manchester United beat Lyon 5-4 to reach the Europa League semi-finals.
A tifo was unveiled prior to kick-off and everyone at Old Trafford knew it was a big occasion.
For United fans, the season hung by a thread, grasping for a European journey that will take them to Bilbao at the end of May.
The Red Devils led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot, before throwing away that lead in the second half. Lyon kicked on in extra time and took a two-goal lead before late goals from Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire ensured that United were going into the next round.
After beating Lyon, United will travel to Bilbao for the semi-finals, in what promises to be a mouth-watering contest.
Bruno Fernandes scores 5,000th goal at Old Trafford
The nine-goal thriller saw a 5,000th goal scored at the iconic Old Trafford stadium.
The scorer, Bruno Fernandes, was on target from the penalty spot after Casemiro was fouled inside the box.
Old Trafford is 115 years old and it’s fitting that the landmark goal was scored by a club captain, and Fernandes has been – by far – United’s best player this season.
United lost their first match at Old Trafford, beaten 4-3 by Liverpool on 19 February 2010, when Sandy Turnbull was the first goalscorer.
No player has scored more goals at Old Trafford than Sir Bobby Charlton (138), while Wayne Rooney and Denis Law both scored 135 goals at the Theatre of Dreams.
Fernandes has scored 52 goals at Old Trafford.
Record-breaking win over Lyon
United’s 5-4 win over Lyon was the first match in major European football history to see five goals scored after extra time.
Three of those goals came in the final seven minutes as Fernandes inspired a late comeback at Lyon’s expense.
United will now hope to go all the way in the Europa League after going this far unbeaten in the competition. They are the only club to do that after reaching the semi-finals.
