Manchester United took a while securing the £47million signing of Bruno Fernandes (BBC). But the Portuguese international was well worth the wait.
Fernandes has already scored three goals and provided four assist in a United shirt. And he looks to be the creative catalyst Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side has been crying out for. But the 25-year-old could also play another role at the club – that of inspiring United’s next generation.
Fernandes has been tipped to become United’s new Eric Cantona. The Frenchman’s influence rubbed off on a whole host of the club’s youngsters and the new signing has a similar confidence on the field.
If any of the Red Devils’ next generation could learn from the £47milion man, it is Angel Gomes.
Doubts remain over Gomes’s future at Old Trafford, with his current contract expiring this summer. Talks are ongoing over a possible extension and, if the 20-year-old stays, he could have the perfect teacher in Fernandes.
The Portuguese has blossomed in recent years and Gomes has the same ability on the ball and eye for a pass. While their statures differ, they share many of the same key skills.
United fans have been desperate to see more of Gomes and, if he stays, his time will come. He is too good to be overlooked forever. But he also needs to develop his game and Fernandes’s play-making ability makes him the ideal tutor.
Hopefully Gomes secures his long-term future at United and Fernandes’s magic rubs off on the youngster. One day, they could both be bossing the same midfield.
