Following Antony‘s call-up to Brazil’s 26-man World Cup squad, the Selecao’s national team doctor has provided an injury update on the Manchester United forward.

The 22-year-old was one four United players to be called-up to Tite’s squad for the tournament that kicks off in Qatar later this month.

United’s number 21 was joined in the five-time World Cup winner’s side by Alex Telles, Fred and Casemiro.

Having started every match for the Red Devils since reuniting with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford following his big money from Ajax, the former Sau Paulo youngster has missed the last three games due to injury.

The twenty-time league champions only have two games left before the domestic season pauses for the World Cup.

But with the 11-time Brazil international yet to return to training at Carrington, it remains to be seen whether Antony will feature against Aston Villa on Thursday night in the Carabao Cup, and against Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday.

But Brazil’s national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar has revealed that Antony is currently recovering from a hip injury, and he’s being closely monitored.

Speaking via GOAL, Lasmar said: “Antony had a little problem with the flexor muscles of his right hip, he’s in the process of recovering.

“We’re in contact with the player, the medical department. He’s in a recovery phase. We have time for him to recover in time to be with us.

“This week is important; we’re talking day by day. This final phase is important.

“It depends a lot on this week. I talked to him in the morning, he’s feeling better, he’s precocious. He hasn’t started training with the group yet, he’s in physical therapy.”

During Antony’s absence, Anthony Elanga, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford have been used on the right-hand side, but Ten Hag’s forward lacks balance and threat without the talented left-footed South American cutting inside and conjuring up his moments of magic.
