Manchester United are counting the cost of missed chances and poor defending in a home loss to Bournemouth.
If you had been told before the game that Manchester United would have 60 per cent possession, 23 shots at goal, and an expected goals tally of 2.26, you would feel pretty good about the chances of the result ending in a home win.
Manchester United lost 3-0, with Bournemouth scoring three goals from just five shots on target, and 10 overall.
United’s seven shots on target were wasteful – yet behind the profligacy is a positive sign that the team did perform well, by some measurement.

Bournemouth admissions
Bournemouth were clinical in their approach, you have to give them credit for the way they were ruthless – even though they benefitted from United’s failure in front of goal.
Winger and goalscorer Antoine Semenyo admitted that Manchester United were unfortunate not to score.
Semenyo told BBC Sport: “We were clinical on our end and they were unlucky with their chances.”
It is the second successive year Bournemouth have beaten United 3-0 at Old Trafford
Cherries boss Andoni Iraola admitted that the scoreline flattered his team and they had to work for the performance. Last year, United probably deserved to lose by four or five.
Iraola said: “We won 3-0 but it was more difficult than it looks when you see 3-0.”
Manchester United to stick to the plan
Ruben Amorim is trying to introduce an improved style of plan to the team and introduce his methods. And results remain bumpy along the way.
This was certainly a setback, a chance missed to climb the table, and United remain rooted in the bottom half heading into Christmas.
United have not won back to back Premier League games all season, highlighting the inconsistency in the squad. And if you don’t score goals at home, you can’t expect to win.
Let’s hope for a much better 2025.
