It’s fair to say that one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s biggest regrets as Manchester United manager was failing to sign Erling Haaland.

The Red Devils tried to sign him before he signed for Borussia Dortmund but Erling Haaland’s agent, Mino Raiola, made the deal difficult for Manchester United.

Haaland has since gone on to scored 60 goals for arch-rivals Manchester City last seaosince his move to the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2022 and will surely go down as one of United’s biggest regrets.

The Norwegian forward bagged a hattrick in City’s 6-3 win over Erik ten Hag’s side United last season. Benni McCarthy, now part of the backroom staff at Old Trafford, has been speaking about the monster centre-forward.

McCarthy’s Haaland verdict

The former FC Porto striker was speaking to South African radio station 947 and was asked about the Norwegian and it’s fair to say the coach was effusive about Haaland and gave his thoughts on whether he could teach the Norwegian new tricks had the forward ever moved to Old Trafford.

“If he was to sign for Man United, then hell yeah,” he stated. “I would love to contribute but I don’t see that ever happening. I can’t see a possibility of me ever coaching Erling Haaland. But I think he’s a great striker.”

Judging by the improvements made in Marcus Rashford’s game after the influence of the South African, you wonder just how much more frightening the 23-year-old would be under McCarthy.

McCarthy details how Haaland can improve

Interestingly, during his interview with the radio show, McCarthy detailed how the Norwegian could improve his game, despite the record-breaking season Haaland has just had.

“He’s still got loads of room for improvement,” McCarthy said. “I observe and analyse a lot of attacking players, sometimes I just feel he can improve his game a little bit, especially when defenders try to mark him out of the game.”

The Norwegian was certainly not as lethal during the other two meetings with United last season as he failed to score in either game and looked rather invisible throughout.
