Ben Foster criticises one Manchester United deal as ‘mistake’ and says it did not need to happen

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster says the decision to replace David de Gea with Andre Onana this summer was a mistake.

Manchester United made the decision this summer to part ways with long-serving goalkeeper David de Gea.

The club did not handle it well at all, as seems par for the course with United in the post-Fergie era.

Andre Onana was signed from Inter Milan for a fee of £43 million, and he has had a difficult start at Old Trafford.

Ben Foster told his YouTube channel that he feels Manchester United should have stuck with David de Gea this summer.

He believes signing the Cameroon goalkeeper was an error of judgment from the club.

Foster explained: “Yes, without doubt it’s a mistake that didn’t need to happen. Its like the Arsenal one with Raya, it didn’t need to happen.

“It’s a position that was already set, already sorted, just leave it as it is.”

Foster says priorities are wrong

There are two issues wrapped up into one here. One, should David de Gea have been replaced, to which many Manchester United fans agreed on.

The secondary aspect is, was Andre Onana the right choice of replacement. Some are unconvinced, others believe the goalkeeper simply needs more time.

Foster believes clubs, not just United, have a distorted view of what a top goalkeeper needs to provide, which led to the Red Devils ushering De Gea out the door.

He said: “Do you reckon we are ever going to get back to that golden age of where goalies just stop the ball going in the back of the net, when that’s the most important thing that managers want?

“That would be incredible.”
