BBC pundit says Manchester United have chance to do what he previously thought was ‘impossible’

Chris Sutton has had his say on whether he believes Manchester United will secure a Champions League spot this season.

The momentum seems to be with Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United right now with a late 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park looking like a massive victory in the context of this season.

With four straight victories, and the Red Devils cutting the gap to just six points from the Champions League spots, a place in Europe’s elite club competition isn’t looking out of the realms of possibility, compared to a few weeks ago.

Putting together a consistent run of form towards the end of the season will play a big part in their chances of qualification.

Sutton on United’s chances

Speaking on BBC Sport’s Monday Night Club, former Premier League striker Chris Sutton has given his verdict on whether he believes the Red Devils can achieve Champions League football.

“Ten Hag has had a difficult time of things this season,” Sutton began by saying. “The way he dealt with the Rashford situation after his antics in Belfast, he’s got him onside now. The Hojlund situation is another one and he’s showing what a decent player he is going to be.

“I’m not getting carried away with Man United but they somehow look like a different team. They’ve wormed their way back into a position that was impossible a month back.

“They’ve got lucky at times this season but things seem to be clicking and that is a possibility now (Champions League football).”

United’s top four chance

The Red Devils have been incredibly inconsistent this campaign but seem to be clicking into gear at just the right time.

Achieving Champions League football would be superb for the incoming owners and that is an understatement. Having the money that the European competition brings, as well as the quality of players they could target, with actual football people in place, would be a godsend.

However, with 14 games to go, this won’t be an easy task for the Red Devils and they may well need to win 11 out of 14 games, which includes an away trip to the Etihad Stadium as well as home games against Arsenal and Liverpool. It certainly won’t be easy.
