BBC pundit praises ‘absolute world class’ moment from Man Utd star vs Ipswich, ex-United man says ‘unbelievable’

Manchester United’s first game of the Ruben Amorim era is complete, ending in a 1-1 draw.

United got off to the perfect start when Marcus Rashford put the side 1-0 up after a driving run from wing-back Amad.

Ipswich then came back into the game, getting a foothold and going in at half-time 1-1, after Omari Hutchinson’s strike was deflected out of the path of Andre Onana’s dive.

It was always going to take something like that to get past Onana, who is the Premier League golden glove leader.

Andre Onana’s outstanding moment

With United leading, Andre Onana kept the team in front with a point blank save from striker Liam Delap.

A low pass into the box found Delap who had a scoring chance gifted to him and you expected to see the net ripple.

Onana met his forceful shot straight on, making a terrific one-handed save to repel his effort away from the United goal.

The stop was hailed on MUTV by Danny Simpson, who described it as a ‘massive save’. Danny Webber added, “Onana has not done much apart from spread himself and stay strong, and make the goal smaller, it’s an unbelievable save.”

And on BBC 5 Live, Mark Schwarzer commented: “That is an absolute world class save by Andre Onana. I’m not sure if it hits him in the head or the arm. Liam Delap doesn’t do a lot wrong, he tries to lift it towards the near post area with pace but Onana flies out to block it.”

Onana improvement a big plus

One year ago Andre Onana was struggling to establish himself at Manchester United amid a series of particularly poor Champions League performances.

Onana returned better and stronger from a difficult AFCON campaign in January, and has really proven his credentials.

His big save against Ipswich highlights the quality he is capable of, and follows an eye-catching double save from short-range against Palace earlier this season.

You are far more likely to see Onana pulling off a wonder-save now, than making a mistake, and that highlights his improvement, giving Ruben Amorim something positive to build on.
