Former Newcastle United striker and BBC pundit Alan Shearer feels sorry for Rasmus Hojlund as the Danish striker’s goalscoring struggles continue.

Manchester United drew a blank at Anfield but picked up what could be a vital point against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool as they drew 0-0 against the Merseyside club who are hoping to be in a title race this season.

Erik ten Hag’s United defended resolutely but going forward, the Red Devils really struggled to create chances of any clear quality as the passing through the line was, at times, abysmal.

Rasmus Hojlund had the best chance for the Red Devils as good work from Scott McTominay and Antony combined to set up the Danish striker but he couldn’t finish his chance as he was denied by Alisson.

Alan Shearer, speaking on Match Of The Day 2, had sympathy for the former Atalanta striker and instead pointed the finger of blame towards the United wingers who struggled to get involved with the game.

“I think he will come good,” Shearer said. “He has to improve his link-up play and finishing but I do have sympathy for him.

“I try to put myself in his position, I look at Garnacho, a lot of the time he is running with his head down.

“He doesn’t pick his head up enough to see when the centre forwards is about to run.

“On the other side is Antony. It would do my nut in playing with him because you know 99.99 per cent of the time he is coming inside onto that left foot.”

United’s wingers

When Marcus Rashford came on for the last knockings of the game, one of his first actions, in an attacking sense, was a fired low cross into the six-yard box which caused the hosts issues.

For the 80 minutes prior to this, however, the wingers were not crossing the ball enough, Hojlund was running around looking more and more frustrated as time went on.

Antony and Alejandro Garnacho seem to shoot first when their first thought should be to create for their number 9, they just do not create enough for the 20-year-old on a regular basis and it is becoming an issue.
