Garth Crooks proves he just doesn’t get it when it comes to the Glazers – and Manchester United.
For years Manchester United fans have had to put up with all sorts of misinformation from the media when it comes to owners the Glazers.
At long last, many of them appear to be waking up to just what a horrific job they have done in terms of the product on the pitch, and also the financial mess they have made.
The BBC on the other hand, give a voice to pundits who bury their heads in the sand and pump out inaccuracies.
Getting it wrong
Former player Garth Crooks has a team of the week column on BBC Sport which he also uses to rant about anything and everything.
His latest comments on the Glazers are a case in point, where he gets it totally and utterly wrong.
Crooks says: “The much-maligned Glaziers at Manchester United have dug deep into their pockets in order to put their club back among the elite and we all saw what happened at Old Trafford when their fans thought they were being taken for a ride by their owners.”
Even ignoring the fact the Glazers’ name is spelt incorrectly (which shows the level of research) – Crooks is horrifically wrong.
The Glazers have not ‘dug deep into their pockets’, they have not spent a single penny of their own cash.
Manchester United’s latest accounts revealed a £535 million debt, and that was just the start.
The club actually owe a staggering £969 million when factoring in transfer fees, bank loans on top of the debt.
The Athletic report that instead of spending money on Manchester United, the Glazers have ‘received’ almost £200 million from the club in dividends since taking over.
The figures are scary, and the near £1 billion debt was covered in a report by The BBC in recent days.
So why they permit Crooks to voice his unresearched comments is an affront, and a disgrace to the license fee. Manchester United fans, and football fans in general, deserve better.
