Barcelona have enjoyed success in their recent match-ups against Manchester United. Before last week’s 2-2 draw they had won four straight times, including two finals.
One of these matches was a 1-0 win over United at Old Trafford in 2019. Heading into the game, there was plenty of arrogance from the club’s social media team.
Barcelona tweeted: It’s time to conquer “The theatre of dreams”.
It was a post which backfired in epic manner with Manchester United winning 2-1 to knock Barcelona out of the Europa League.
This doesn’t make up for Champions League final defeats in 2009 and 2011, but it felt pretty good, especially after a run of losses against Spanish opposition in knockout games.
Barcelona had led 1-0 at half-time before Fred and Antony scored second half goals to win it for United.
United have some fun too
Manchester United’s social media account had a bit of fun too, taking a jab at Xavi.
The Barcelona boss had referred to Bruno Fernandes as ‘the Portuguese guy’ in his pre-match press conference.
Fernandes provided the assist for United’s equalising goal which sparked the comeback, and it seems he has a new nickname.
