Barcelona missed opportunity to sign highly-rated Man Utd youngster, 19 y/o closing in on debut under Ruben Amorim

Manchester United have focused on signing young talents since Ineos took control of football operations in 2024.

After years of criticism aimed at Manchester United for poor recruitment in the transfer market, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already influenced the club’s newfound approach to targeting players.

The days of spending huge fees on top of enormous salaries appear to be ending at Old Trafford. We already know Ratcliffe wasn’t a fan of Casemiro’s arrival as United signed a player who was past his best.

Casemiro proved to be a key player in his first season at United, although it was clear he wasn’t the same player who enjoyed multiple Champions League triumphs at Real Madrid.

Ineos chiefs are instead focusing on youth players to create a bright future for United.

United have signed several young talents in the past year, such as Ayden Heaven, Chido Obi and Leny Yoro. There has been a shift in recruitment and it is likely to continue this summer.

Barcelona wanted Man Utd starlet Sekou Kone

Sekou Kone is one of the most talented youngsters to join United in the past year.

The 19-year-old completed a £1 million transfer from Malian side Guidars FC last summer on deadline day.

It is understood that Kone was initially scouted by United in 2023 at the Under-17 World Cup in Indonesia.

Kone has represented United’s U19s and U21s since joining the club, but he is already on the verge of making his first-team debut.

Amorim has included Kone in his matchday squad three times this season – featuring on the bench against Tottenham, Everton and Nottingham Forest.

According to Spanish outlet Sport (print edition) via Sport Witness, Barcelona were interested in signing Kone before he joined United.

The report claims Barcelona sporting director Deco is not looking to sign a physical midfielder in the summer due to their finances and the development of existing players.

Regarding Barcelona’s failed pursuit of Kone, the newspaper states: “The problem is that some of the targets required small financial compensation and have already escaped months ago.”

Barcelona’s shortcomings made it easier for United to reach an agreement after leaving it late to complete the deal on August 30, 2024.

Kone shining in United’s academy

The Malian had to wait for his first start in United’s academy. It didn’t come until November due to missing pre-season while the transfer process dragged on.

Kone suffered an injury 40 minutes into his first start for the U21s against Huddersfield. It ruled him out for weeks.

Now on the fringes of United’s first-team, the young midfielder is still getting minutes with the U21s, as seen last weekend when he scored an unstoppable left-footed volley against Leeds.

Kone also won the penalty for Sam Mather’s equaliser as the game ended 2-2.

MUTV presenter Liam Bradford compared Kone to Kobbie Mainoo after the match, which is the sort of comparison that will excite United fans.

It begs the question whether United should consider sending Kone on loan if he’s unlikely to be playing regularly for Amorim next season.
