Barcelona consider Manchester United's offer for De Jong too important to reject, claim Marca

Barcelona are weighing up their options over in-demand midfielder Frenkie de Jong. At present, they are leaning towards selling him, Marca report.

This week  Marca reported how Manchester United have made a proposal to Barcelona to sign De Jong, worth a total £68 million. The Spanish club were said to be considering the offer.

No formal decision has been made on De Jong’s future just yet, but a new update from Marca this evening suggests the Blaugruna could have to let the midfielder go.

The offer would make De Jong to be Barcelona’s second highest ever sale, behind Neymar. This is a significant figure which could be too important to reject.

‘Too important to reject’

Barcelona’s finances are delicately poised, with the report stating: “Economic limitations prevent [them] from advancing in sports planning and closing the signings of the players that Xavi longs for for his project.

“He needs to make a significant transfer. And, at the moment, the great, and only sale, that seems feasible is that of Frenkie de Jong.

“In the offices they consider that the offer is too important not to accept it. The economic situation does not allow to reject it, despite the fact that Xavi is delighted with the performance and professionalism of Frenkie de Jong.”

No sizeable offers are anticipated for Pedri or Ansu Fati, two other big assets on the clubs books, and they would rather keep both of them.

Letting De Jong leave would be a reluctant choice, but one Barcelona may have no choice to ultimately accept.

United’s proposals are made up of £51 million up front and £17 million in add-ons.

It is possible this does get knocked back, and Barcelona demand more of the cash up front, or in a different structure to the way United are proposing it.

Mundo Deportivo reported today that Xavi will sign off on a sale of De Jong if Barcelona are confident of succeeding in signing a top player who will strengthen the team.

De Jong’s agent Ali Dursun is scheduled for a meeting in Barcelona this week, which could make or break the deal.

Marca report that while De Jong has publicly insisted his desire to stay, “the insistence of United and Ten Hag and the pressure that Barcelona can put on him could change his position.”
