Manchester United continue to be linked with Ayyoub Bouaddi as a potential target for the 2026 midfield overhaul.

The first transfer links to Ayyoub Bouaddi emerged at the end of the 2024/25 season, and the 18-year-old midfielder has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Bouaddi has been compared to Adam Wharton as a midfielder, and he is quickly attracting interest from European giants ahead of the summer window.

Earlier this week, reports from France claimed that Lille are open to selling Bouaddi for a club-record fee.

Ayyoub Bouaddi’s style of play and strengths

Bouaddi likely isn’t a household name for United fans who don’t regularly watch French football, so let’s explore his biggest strengths and his style of play as a midfielder.

As per WhoScored, Bouaddi has three significant strengths based on his match statistics

It adds that Bouaddi likes to make short passes, layoffs and to tackle.

TotalFootballAnalysis describe Bouaddi as “more of a midfield enforcer than a final-third threat.”

He ranks in the top 94th percentile for defensive duels per 90 minutes and defensive duel success rate.

Bouaddi is not much of a goal threat, ranking in the bottom 5% for shots and goal contributions per 90 minutes.

Ayyoub Bouaddi is a strong partner for Kobbie Mainoo

With Casemiro leaving at the end of the season, Ineos’ top priority is finding a long-term successor to the Brazilian.

United fans can expect a top-class midfielder to arrive in the summer, likely one of Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton or Sandro Tonali.

But a younger midfielder could also be signed, and that is where Bouaddi could be brought in. Like Kobbie Mainoo, the teenager has plenty of first-team experience despite his age.

Bouaddi already has 90 first-team appearances for Lille, and his defensive mindset would complement Mainoo as a midfield partner.

While Mainoo looks forward in possession and wants to roam, Bouaddi is a duel-winner who can cover plenty of ground.
