Ashley Young was among the first former Manchester United players to send Michael Carrick a message following his return to Old Trafford as head coach for the remainder of the season.

It’s been a big week for Michael Carrick.

Seven months after getting sacked at Middlesbrough, Carrick is now Manchester United head coach, albeit temporarily.

With United sitting seventh in the Premier League ahead of Saturday’s Manchester derby, Carrick has been tasked with qualifying for the Champions League.

United chiefs will now work on considering who they want as permanent head coach, with a decision expected in the summer when Carrick’s reign is expected to end.

Carrick has the utmost support from United fans, as was the case for those who stood in the dugout before him.

Now, with the football world reacting to Carrick’s return to Old Trafford, one of his former United teammates has sent a supportive message.

Ashley Young is backing Michael Carrick as Man Utd head coach

Ashley Young and Carrick spent seven seasons together at United.

Carrick was already a United player when Young signed from Aston Villa in the summer of 2011. They remained teammates until the central midfielder retired in 2018.

Although both players were signed by Sir Alex Ferguson, they were also part of United teams managed by David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, and Jose Mourinho.

Young was among the first former United players to react to Carrick’s return to the club. The former winger took to X, writing: “All the best Carras.”

As well as supportive messages, Carrick will know that scrutiny comes with the job, and there will be plenty of that between now and the end of the season.

Carrick returns to United with more experience as a coach than when he left following a brief interim stint in 2021, following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal.

Ashley Young’s record at Ipswich Town this season

Young left Everton after two years to complete a summer move to Ipswich Town ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Former United coach Kieran McKenna, who worked closely with Carrick, brought the 40-year-old to Ipswich Town to boost their chances of promotion after being relegated to the Championship last term.

Young has made 14 appearances for Ipswich Town this season, registering two assists.

Ipswich Town are currently third in the Championship after 25 matches, with 44 points on the board.

The Tractor Boys are eight points adrift of leaders Coventry City, while Middlesbrough are second with 46 points.
