Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres shares verdict on Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim, ‘suited me perfectly’

Manchester United seemingly won’t be signing Viktor Gyokeres this summer, but the Arsenal-bound striker has heaped praise on Ruben Amorim.

We are now just over a month away from the start of the Premier League season, and Manchester United only have one attacking addition on board.

Matheus Cunha joined United from Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this summer, but further attacking signings have proven elusive.

United continue to chase Bryan Mbeumo, but Brentford continue to stand firm on their asking price for the forward.

A central striker will be on the radar as well, with United interested in Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt.

Viktor Gyokeres has been linked with United for a while now, but a reunion with Ruben Amorim seemingly won’t be happening this summer.

Viktor Gyokeres praises Ruben Amorim

Gyokeres could not stop scoring under Amorim, finding the net 66 times in 68 games while also adding 23 assists.

The Swede has become hot property in the transfer market, and United have made contact to sign Gyokeres this summer.

Sadly, that deal doesn’t appear to be on the cards with Arsenal now closing in on Gyokeres to bolster Mikel Arteta’s attack.

Gyokeres has now spoken to L’Equipe and France Football, discussing the impact Amorim has had on his career.

Gyokeres highlighted that Sporting pulled off an ‘incredible achievement’ by winning two league titles in a row, with Amorim playing a ‘big role’ despite leaving for United in November.

The striker added that he simply couldn’t thank Amorim enough, as his style of play suited him absolutely perfectly.

“We won two championships in a row, for the first time in 71 years. It’s an incredible achievement, and of course, Ruben Amorim played a big role in that,” said Gyokeres.

“I can’t thank him enough. The style of play we had under his orders suited me perfectly,” he added.

Viktor Gyokeres on Ruben Amorim exit

Gyokeres also commented on Amorim’s decision to leave Sporting for United midway through the season.

Gyokeres admitted that Amorim’s exit was a ‘shock’, especially as Sporting were enjoying such strong form in Portugal’s top flight.

Sporting still won the league title, and Gyokeres now admits he understands why Amorim made the move to United.

“It was a shock. It’s never happened to me to see a manager leave in the middle of the season when everything was going well. Yes, it was surprising, but I totally understand his decision,” he added.

Gyokeres still has plenty of respect for Amorim, but will now join a Premier League rival, and a move to Arsenal will see him face United on the first day of the Premier League season.

The timing just hasn’t aligned for Gyokeres and United, with a lack of Champions League football at Old Trafford potentially scuppering any realistic hope of a move.

If United had Champions League football on offer, Gyokeres may well have been tempted to reunite with Amorim, but his move to Arsenal will see him become an enemy.
