With Argentina leading 2-0 at the time, United’s number six replaced Juventus’ Leandro Paredes and Scaloni switched to a three-man backline to see out the victory.
The 24-year-old slotted in on the left-hand side of Argentina’s three centre-backs Nicolas Otamendi and Cristian Romero.
Martinez’s former Ajax teammate Nicolas Tagliafico was playing at left-back before moving to left wing-back when the Butcher was introduced.
Martinez, who will be hoping to earn his third start in Qatar in the final, expressed his delight in reaching the final with a post on Instagram.
Alongside the likes of Tagliafico, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez commented on Argentina number 25’s post: “You are amazing”.
