Manchester United’s record in the transfer market since Sir Alex Ferguson retired has been so bad that Ineos are still picking up the scraps.
From Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s revelation that United are still paying for players already at the club to spending millions on wages of players hardly available, it’s a mistake madness.
In recent years, if one were to ask Man Utd fans the biggest mistakes in that sea of madness, chances are that Antony and Casemiro’s names will come up the most.
A recent report has now revealed that the club’s data department also red-flagged both these moves, but another move that was green-flagged by the club has been as big an embarrassment as the other two.

Man Utd’s data department revelation
Ratcliffe caused a sensation at Old Trafford in an earlier interview when he claimed that United didn’t have a data department to speak of.
In his usual candour, he said that the club’s data ops were still stuck in the 20th century, and that is something Ineos want to prioritise getting right.
The Telegraph’s recent report comes as a surprise then because it claims that Ineos took over a well-functioning data department and took an axe to it.
In the report, it is revealed that United panicked after two heavy losses in Erik ten Hag’s first two games at Old Trafford and splurged on Antony and Casemiro, two signings red-flagged by the analysts.
While the analysts have been bang-on about it, how data isn’t an exact science has been revealed by the green light they gave to Mason Mount.
The report states that the modelling on Mount didn’t throw up any ‘undue concerns’ over injuries, and United beating Liverpool and Arsenal to his signing – two clubs with famed data ops – is proof that Mount has been just unlucky.
Sums up United’s luck in the process…
Mason Mount is not a lost case yet
The report also states that Luke Shaw’s contract extension wasn’t the wisest move so the department still has more hits than misses.
In Mount, their big miss can also be corrected because unlike Antony, Casemiro, or even Luke Shaw, Mount has time on his side.
His contract runs till 2028 and Ruben Amorim is a huge fan. He can play multiple roles in the current system and if there aren’t any undue concerns over his injuries, then it might just be a case of bad luck.
Amorim has handled players returning from injury extremely well and the hope is that Mount finally breaks out of the vicious cycle.
