Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has provided a telling response when asked whether he wanted Christian Eriksen back at Spurs this summer.

The 30-year-old opted to join Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United on a three-year deal over re-signing with former club Brentford.

After signing a short-term deal with the Bees, until the end of the season, in January, the Danish midfield maestro was one of the most sought-after free agents in the summer market.

The Red Devils won the race to secure Eriksen’s signature, but at some stage the Danish midfield maestro was linked with a move back to Tottenham.

Speaking in today’s pre-match press conference ahead of his side’s trip to Old Trafford on Wednesday night, Conte was asked whether he wanted Eriksen back at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Conte, who worked with the Denmark international at Inter Milan, said: “Yeah, I don’t want to speak about players of other team.

“For sure Christian is a player I enjoyed working with and I would like to train him again, to have him in my squad but you know the transfer market is very difficult and he made a big choice to sign for United for three years of contract.

“For him I wish him the best for his family, apart from the game against us and for the rest of the season to be the best on the pitch.

“Now is not the time to say but for sure Christian was a player everyone wanted in their team.”

Eriksen, who had started every Premier League game so far this season, missed United’s 0-0 draw against Newcastle United yesterday through illness.

It remains to be seen whether the playmaker will be available to face his former club at the Theatre of Dreams.
