Anthony Martial starts against Real Madrid and gets subbed off injured after 40 minutes
Anthony Martial has been on a poor run of form at Sevilla and was pretty lucky to start against Real Madrid last night.
This seeming stroke of fortune transpired to be bad luck after all, with Martial suffering a fresh injury blow.
The Frenchman was substituted on 40 minutes, after his side had taken a surprise 2-0 lead.
Martial had not made too much impact despite Sevilla’s lead, touching the ball only eight times in 40 minutes.
During the 40 minutes, Martial had one shot off target, and did not create any chances, and picked up a yellow card for his efforts.
He was injured after a tackle from Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, in which Martial’s foot seemed to get caught under his opponents’.
This was the second time during Martial’s loan spell at Sevilla that he has had to be substituted in the first half of a game.
Sevilla went onto lose the game 3-2, capping a frustrating evening.
Opportunity passes Martial by
For the problems Martial has experienced at Sevilla so far, a big performance against Real Madrid could have turned everything around. It was not to be.
Having failed to score in the 1-0 loss at Barcelona, disappointing in the Europa League against West Ham, and missing the derby with Real Betis due to injury, this game against Real Madrid was really the last big game on Sevilla’s fixture list to make a real impression.
Martial has just one goal since signing for Sevilla and he will face a race to be fit for Thursday night’s game against Levante.
Fabrizio Romano last week reported Sevilla have no intention of signing the Manchester United forward on a permanent basis, and sadly for the Red Devils, his latest injury will not have changed their minds.
