Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has shown his support for young teammate Anthony Elanga.
Anthony Elanga came off the bench in the 87th minute for Sweden last night and still managed to score, helping his nation to a 5-0 victory over Azerbaijan.
This was Elanga’s first goal for club and country since the international fixtures last summer, and a much needed confidence boost for the young forward.
Elanga’s speed prised open the worn down Azerbaijan defence, and he showed composure to round the goalkeeper and slot the ball into the net from a tight angle.
Anthony Elanga scores
Anthony Elanga will return to Manchester United with a spring in his step, also demonstrating to manager Erik ten Hag that he can make an impact from the bench.
While he is unlikely to be a regular starter for United, the 20-year-old could still make an impact between now and the end of the season.
He was congratulated on Instagram by his Manchester United teammates, including Fred and Victor Lindelof.
Fellow forward Anthony Martial reached out to say ‘Everything is good’, as he prepares to make a return of his own.
Anthony Elanga spoke after the game to express his delight at hitting the back of the net again.
This was exactly what United wanted him to do during the international break, and could spark his season, if he gets an opportunity at club level.
He told Fotball Skanalen: “It always feels good to score a goal. I feel good. I have felt good all week. I wanted to show what I can do, even if I only got three or four minutes. I could have scored two goals.”
Elanga went on to say he gave his match shirt to his dad, former Cameroon international Joseph Elanga.
