Anthony Martial becomes free agent again after abrupt end to Mexico stint

Former Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is looking for a new club after his contract at Liga MX outfit Monterrey was terminated.

Anthony Martial arrived at Manchester United in 2015 with so much promise. Fans started to believe he was the next big thing immediately when he scored a stunning solo goal against Liverpool on his debut. Who could blame them?

But reflecting on Martial’s nine years at Old Trafford, it was massively underwhelming, and he was far too injury-prone, especially towards the end.

Martial made a total of 317 appearances and scored 90 goals across all competitions for United. He has since played for AEK Athens and Rayados.

Anthony Martial and Rayados agree mutual contract termination

France international Martial has become a free agent for the third time in his career.

After nine years at United, Martial’s contract expired and he became a free agent for the first time.

He eventually signed for Greek Super League club AEK Athens in September 2024, but left a year later under similar circumstances.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Martial and Monterrey have agreed on contract termination by mutual agreement.

In Mexico, Martial made just 20 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and registering three assists along the way.

Monterrey finished 13th in the league this season and failed to reach the play-offs. They’ve decided to move Martial on as a result.

It remains to be seen if any European clubs will be willing to take a risk on Martial. At 30-years-old, he doesn’t have the same reputation he once had at Old Trafford.

How long was Anthony Martial’s contract at Monterrey?

Martial initially signed a two-year deal when he joined Monterrey.

The French international has lasted just one year at the club.

TUDN reported last month that there were doubts over his future after a falling out at Monterrey.

It seems they’ve agreed to go their separate ways.
