Anthony Elanga speaks out on his Manchester United situation

Anthony Elanga has spoken out about his frustration over how few minutes the winger has played for Manchester United in recent weeks.

Speaking to Aftonbladet, the Swedish winger revealed that he has spoken with Erik Ten Hag over his lack of playing time with the first-team this season, with Elanga playing just 672 minutes for United, starting just seven matches in all competitions for the Red Devils.

With Elanga playing well over 2,000 minutes last campaign under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, it is understandable why the 20-year-old has been annoyed with his limited playing time under Ten Hag, who has opted for Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony as his wide-options.

Indeed, the Malmo-born talent still has a role to play in United’s long-term plans. But with playing time hard to come by this season, it’s no wonder why rumours are now heating up over Elanga potentially leaving Old Trafford in the summer transfer window.

Elanga said: “It is frustrating. You want to play, it’s important. But whether you play or not, it’s up to the coach not me. I have spoken to Erik [ten Hag] and it is private between the two of us. I know what he wants me to do and I just keep training hard.

The Swedish international added: “When the opportunity comes, I just have to be ready to take it. We have a lot of conversations, not only about [the lack of game time] but also what is happening around. That’s the good thing about the club, we talk a lot and they help me a lot.”

Elanga found himself as one of United’s most important players last season, and whilst it makes sense why Ten Hag opted to bring in his own attacker in Antony, there’s still a good case to be made that the Swedish winger should have played more minutes this season.

Still on 20 and proven in the Premier League, Elanga will be kicking himself for how little he has played this campaign, and whilst his United career is far from over, a loan move in the summer wouldn’t be a surprise to many if the club decide to ship out the forward for the year.
